Welcome from the Dean of Research

Research programs are available at the masters and PhD level across all schools within Science and Engineering and there's probably never been a better time to get involved. With a global economic boom driven by the resources sector, demand for quality research is unprecedented, as is demand for engineers and scientists with advanced knowledge and skills.

The Faculty is committed to providing cutting-edge research to the world market through strong ties with other universities, research groups and industry, with support from the Australian Research Council. In addition to this collaboration, the Faculty's strength in research is underpinned by our outstanding research centres.

Curtin recently established a structure of Tier One and Tier Two research centres on recommendation from the SARA Review into research and research funding. This forms part of a strategy to raise the profile of research within the University. It also enables Curtin to respond to the Australian Government's policy which requires universities to specialise by identifying areas of strength in which they are competitive and in which there is market demand. The Science and Engineering Tier One and Two research centres (those identified as our pre-eminent centres) are shown below.

I must also take this opportunity to acknowledge the inspiring work of our research staff. Without their dedication and hard work, our research programs would not have half the reputation they currently enjoy. A special mention must go to Professor Svetha Venkatesh from our Institute for Multi-sensor Processing and Content Analysis, who was recently named a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

Professor Roland De Marco,
Dean of Research, Faculty of Science and Engineering
